Ireland Looking West and East
In this special tour we will voyage out to the Aran Islands for a close encounter with one of the most unique places on earth. We will first get our bearings in lively Galway City before exploring the Burren and sailing to our homebase for four nights, Inisheer, the smallest of the three Aran Ireland. We will travel to Inishmaan, the middle island, where Irish playwright John Millington Synge was advised by Yeats to go "to express a life that has never found expression." We will also sail to Inishmore with its magnificent stone fortress Dun Aonghasa, erected around 1100 B.C. Back on the mainland, or as Aran Islanders call it, "Ireland," we will travel up through Connemara along the breathtaking famine trail to Westport in County Mayo for a two night stay that will include a visit to Achiiles Island, one of the most picturesque spots along the Wild Atlantic Way.
The tour will explore the history, culture, and literature of the west of Ireland. To paraphrase Gabriel Conroy in James Joyce's "The Dead": "The time has come for you to set out on this journey westward."
