In Search of Modern Ireland
June 15th - June 24th 2017
Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Donegal, and Sligo
This special small-group tour will focus on the history and literature of modern Ireland from the end of the Irish War of Independence in 1921 through the roaring of the Celtic Tiger and the Good Friday Agreement of 1999.
What was the consequence of Irish independence? What were the causes and effects of the Irish Civil War and the impact of an independent Irish nation on Irish identity and culture?
We will follow in the footsteps of the activists and artists who formed and reflected contemporary Ireland, from Ireland’s capital, across the border into Northern Ireland and the sectarian conflict that has defined so much of modern Irish history. Travel to the homeplaces of some of Ireland’s greatest writers: James Joyce, Sean O’Casey, Patrick Kavanagh, Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel, and W.B. Yeats.
